"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just one problem: The sender also longs to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile supporters have publicly coveted the role.

It's clear a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos frequently depict them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international following.

But the sister act will forever be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
