Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these drugs should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
