European football's governing body has initiated disciplinary proceedings concerning Chelsea's Pedro Neto after he shoved a sideline assistant in the Champions League loss by PSG.

The 26-year-old, Pedro Neto, shoved the youngster during added time of Wednesday's last-16 fixture at Parc des Princes – a match in which his team suffered a 5-2 – an action that led to the boy falling from a stool.

It sparked a heated exchange between both sets of players.

Uefa said the case has been opened against Neto on grounds of "conduct contrary to sporting spirit" as per the official rules.

"Disciplinary officials will make a ruling on this case at a later date," UEFA added in its statement.

Neto said sorry after the match and blamed being caught up "in the emotion of the game" while he was attempting to get back the match ball.

"I'm not like this. Emotions were running high and I want to apologise. I offered him my jersey as a gesture. I feel terrible about it - I owe him an apology," Neto told broadcasters.

"I have limited French, so teammate Vitinha stepped in and told him I was not like this.

"Finally he [the ball boy] laughed and I gave him my shirt and said sorry many times. He could see it was a mistake and was content with the outcome."

Chelsea host PSG next Tuesday in the second leg, following Newcastle's visit at their home ground this weekend in domestic competition.
