The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
