“That was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the penalty easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.
