Christantus Uche Fuels Dominant Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight passage to the knockout stages, especially after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their league season proved no match against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Control Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
