The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.
